Why does popcorn pop?
A popcorn kernel holds a little water inside a tough shell. Heat turns the water to steam. Pressure builds until the shell bursts open.
The drop in pressure lets hot starch puff out. It forms a foam, then cools into the white shape you eat. The kernel grows much bigger because its starch spreads out. No extra corn has been added to it.

Earth
Why do volcanoes erupt?
Hot, melted rock can rise through cracks in Earth's crust. It holds gases that may expand as the pressure drops. The expanding gas helps push rock toward the surface.
Trapped gas helps drive many eruptions. Thick melted rock can hold gas in, while runnier rock lets it escape more easily. This helps explain why some volcanoes pour out lava and others blast ash high into the air.
